If you do something for five years in a row I think it can officially be called a tradition, yes? So it is with my practice of choosing a "word of the year."
In year's past my words have been Adventure (2017), Change (2018), Growth (2019) and Settle (2020.) It's always been interesting to see how the word ends up guiding or shaping my year, often in some unexpected ways.
I thought long and hard about what I wanted my word to be for this year, and even tried some random word generator websites to see if they could spark any good ideas. In the end, it was actually Joel who came up with my word for this year, which is....drum roll please....
I know, it's a bit of an oddball. But it makes sense for me in ways I'm hoping I can elaborate more on as the year continues.
You know how a lot of people talking about needing to have a good "work/life balance?" I've been thinking for the last few years that what I prefer is a good work/life integration. Ministry is a vocation that doesn't have hard lines about when you are working and when you are not. This is a concept I've been pondering for a long time and perhaps one of my 21 full-length blog posts for this year will be fully fleshing out what I mean by this idea.
I also want to work on integration in my ministry - having the churches I serve work together in our "hub", working with the other ministers on the circuit, and I'd love to see more integration when it comes to different age groups in the church.
Usually when I choose a word of the year it manifests itself in ways I'm not expecting so I'll be curious to see how "integration" pops up this year.
Do you have a word of the year for 2021? If so I'd love to hear it!
