When Breathe Becomes Air

Submitted by Bethany on Wed, 01/25/2017 - 09:23

One of my unwritten goals for 2017  is to read more books.  I have a really bad habit of buying about 5 books at a time, reading 2, then putting the rest on my shelf.  Even if I only do that about 6 times a year, that leaves a lot of unread books on my shelves.  So I'm hoping to work my way through those - and I'm putting myself on a buying freeze in the mean time.

Today I finished a book I've been reading for a couple weeks, one that was recommended by my supervisor at the retirement community.  It's "When Breath Becomes Air" by Paul Kalanithi.  The book is a memoir about Kalanithi's life, he was a brilliant neurosurgeon and researcher with ambitious goals, but was diagnosed with lung cancer in his thirties, and passed away a few years later.

When Breath Becomes Air

The book is gripping, painful to read at times, and causes one to reflect on what is truly important in life.  He talks about how we all know we will die someday, but when a timeline is put on it, your priorities change.  This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately and has sparked some major life changes.  I don't want to wait until death is knocking to realize what I truly want to do in life, I want to do it now.

I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone to read!

XOXO, Bethany
