I'm just gonna put this out there - I get verrrry easily scared at movies.  And, let's be honest, in real life.  The previews for this movie scared the pants off me so I was apprehensive going in about the level of terror I would be facing.  I may or may not have had a glass of wine before going to the theater.  (Spoiler alert: I did!)

The movie opens by dropping us right in the middle of the action.  Blunt and Krasinski and their three children are rummaging around an abandoned pharmacy looking for drugs.  It is very clear they are in some sort of post-apocalyptic wasteland, though we aren't explicitly told why.  I appreciate that the movie did not do narration or any sort of obvious exposition, it just put us right in the middle of the silent, eerie, tension.  In a world where they are trying to be as quiet as humanly possible, this family is at an advantage - their daughter is deaf, so they all know sign language, and are able to use that to communicate.

I don't want to give away any of the story so that is all I will give for background.  I think this movie was extremely well done - I was kept on edge the entire time, holding my breath, waiting for what was going to happen next.  The whole audience invested in these characters and the way silence was their key to survival - the whole theater was one of the most quiet theaters I've ever been in.  For me, this movie proved that Emily Blunt is an incredible actress - I think I will officially declare her as my favorite.  Her portrayal of a mother desperate to keep her children safe was spot on, and to convey the amount of emotion and story she did without saying a word was a sight to behold.  Krasinski really showed us his chops in this movie as he co-wrote and directed - both amazing talents.  His acting was nowhere near Blunt's level of good, but it was good nonetheless.

Even if you don't like scary movies, I think this one is worth seeing.  The story is creative, inventive, and brilliantly told, and the movie itself is well acted and directed.  Have a glass of wine and brace yourself so you can enjoy this incredible movie.
