Holy Moly! I'm not even sure where to begin with this movie because it. was. awesome. I usually don't care for movies where it seems like everything that can go wrong does go wrong (Meet the Parents, Date Night, etc.). At first this movie appeared it would be in the genre, but it was not. Or perhaps it was, just finally done well for once.
The movie opens by introducing us to Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) through a series of games they play together, ending with them married and trying to have a baby. Then we learn about Max's older brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) who is exceedingly cool, successful, and has given Max a bit of a complex over the years. Brooks then decides to host the couple's weekly game night with their friends, and stages a murder mystery party which goes very, very wrong.
Y'all I cannot stress enough how hilarious this movie was. This is one I want to see many times more because I know I will catch more jokes each time. There were parts I wish I could have paused the movie because I was laughing so hard I missed the next joke. (Side note, this often happens to me with Brooklyn 99 as well, if you haven't watched that show yet, you should). There were also several parts where my mouth literally dropped open in surprise because I did not expect what was happening. It was smart, witty, extremely well written, well acted, well directed. It is hands down one of the best comedies I have seen in a long time.
I strongly recommend you cancel the next game night with your friends and instead head to the theater to catch Game Night on the big screen!
