This movie had a lot going against it for me. I'm not a big fan of the "Underdogs With Heart Beating All Odds" genre, although I DO like movies where athletes overcome tragedy to win. So this might have been able to thread the needle, but I also don't care for completely over-the-top characters being treated as if they're just ordinary normal people. I like Dumb and Dumber, for instance, because the other characters realize they're morons. Ace Ventura, however, I'm not a fan of because everyone acts like he's not a social reject. Here we have the Ace version of characters. I'm willing to somewhat suspend disbelief for movies, but the plot is ridiculous, the characters are ridiculous, and the writing is ridiculous. Not my kind of movie.
Uncle Drew is a mythical character that was amazing at basketball in the 60s that turns out to be a real person still better than everyone else at basketball. He is discovered by a down-on-his-luck coach that needs a street ball team. Uncle Drew gets the old gang together to play some ball one last time. And when I say 'old gang' I mean, they're 70ish. Most haven't played at all for decades. So, of course, they just need to get the kinks out and beat the best players that are also vying for $100,000.
With the concept that 70-year-old players can still beat 'young bloods', you'd think they'd be able to find ACTUAL 70-year-old players to play. I still probably wouldn't have liked the movie, but at least they would have some extra points for representing the actual age of the characters. For a similar reason, I don't enjoy stories where children can be trained as ninjas or fighters to punch other adult fighters for any real impact. I'm looking at you, 3 Ninjas! So, to me, this is the 3 Ninjas of old person movies. I didn't enjoy it. But not just for the unbelievable idea of the movie, but also for the unrealistic situations. The sudden betrayals made no sense. The cliche family stuff made no sense. The sudden humility made no sense. This movie made no sense. But, sometimes that can be a fun time at the movies... just watching the silly stuff. But not this time, for me, at least. I did legitimately laugh a couple times, so it wasn't all bad, but it was mostly bad. Skip it unless you're really excited for it.
