After a seeing one preview for this movie I was super psyched for it - it looked dark and funny and mysterious, all of which I tend to enjoy in a movie. Well, as long as it's not too dark. It has to be juuust right. And let me tell you, this one was juuuust right.
The story follows two high school age girls, Lily and Amanda. Both come from extremely privileged Connecticut backgrounds, and though they were friends through freshman year of high school, they have since drifted apart as Lily went to boarding school and Amanda... well Amanda began to unravel. They come together again when Amanda's mom pays Lily to tutor her. From there we see the relationship grow in a twisted way between the two girls. Amanda reveals that she does not and has never felt any emotion - she is in fact a straight up sociopath. Lily reveals her struggles with her mom and particularly her step dad since her mom remarried after her dad's death.
The movie is simultaneously slow and well-paced. I think I've said before that I'm not one who often notices music in movies, but in this one it played a significant part - it's not anything I would listen to on my own, but 100% perfect for this movie. It really feels like a character study of these two girls and they are fascinating to watch. The two young actresses were excellent, and I look forward to seeing them in other movies as their careers hopefully succeed. If you like dark comedy, don't mind slower movies, and enjoy some mystery and intrigue you will love this one!
