I remember hearing some controversy around this movie when the previews first came out a few months ago. The gist of the problem, from what I gathered, was that people didn't like that Bundy was portrayed as a handsome charmer, and played by the incredibly handsome and charming Zac Efron. People didn't like that girls were "swooning" over Efron in the movie, and claimed this was "glamorizing" a monster like Bundy, and making light of his crimes. I remember thinking to myself at the time that really, it made sense to portray Bundy in this way - since he is well known for being handsome and charming. If movies always portray serial killers as that creepy guy in the corner that no one is talking to, we can be lulled into a sense of safety and thinking that we will recognize danger when we see it. The truth is, we never know when someone might be dangerous, and portraying Bundy as the sexy guy you might leave the bar with is important - because that's exactly how he got his victims.

The movie also took the interesting tack of portraying most of the story from the viewpoint of his longtime girlfriend Liz Kendall (played by Lily Collins.) The writing/acting/directing did an excellent job of pulling you into their relationship, seeing Bundy from Kendall's point of view, and understanding why she loved him. There were times that I almost started to doubt his guilt - did they somehow get the wrong guy? As the story progressed and we learned more about his crimes (I really didn't know much about him previously, other than that he was a serial killer) I had a visceral response of disgust.

I appreciate any movie that can stir up such strong emotions. The acting was excellent, and the story was well told if a little slow at the beginning. If you like true-life crime stories, you will definitely want to watch this one. If you like TV crime dramas (Criminal Minds comes to mind especially) then I think you will enjoy this as well. I think it is definitely worth watching!
