I will be the first to admit, I am by no means a Star Wars expert or fanatic. I have seen all of the movies, but I am one of those people who doesn't get all the hate directed to the prequel trilogy (covers face, don't hate me!). So my review might be more relevant for the casual Star Wars fan, and might annoy any true diehards. Read on at your own risk.
As the title might suggest, this movies gives us a background story on the infamous Han Solo and, of course, his buddy Chewbacca. I don't want to give away any of the story, but it is a fast paced, fun filled adventure from start to finish. I loved all the references I was able to catch from this movie to the larger Star Wars universe, though I am sure I caught less than 50% of them. I think the story was well done and for the most part easy to follow. I enjoyed the new characters we met, and the filling out of the back story for ones we already knew.
Cards on the table, I just loved this movie. I laughed a lot, I never felt bored or lost, and in general it was just a lot of fun. I thought the actor tasked with filling the shoes of a "young Harrison Ford" (Alden Ehrenreich) did a fantastic job, and really nailed that trademark smirk of Solo's. Of course the show was really stolen by Donald Glover as a young Lando Calrissian. He. Was. Awesome. I loved Glover on Community, and I've loved pretty much everything of his that I've seen since.
If you are a casual Star Wars fan like myself, I think you will enjoy this movie. Even if you have never seen anything else in the Star Wars universe, I think you could enjoy this movie, so perhaps indulge a spouse or a friend who wants you to go with them. It's one I look forward to watching again when we own it on Blu-Ray!
