I love stories about exceptional people and this movie, as the title suggests, is a movie about exceptional bravery. I have to admit, I'm a sucker for movies like this. If you like (mostly) true stories about real people overcoming real tragedy, then you'll like this movie. But be warned, this movie will rip your heart out if you let it.
Only the Brave tells the story of the first municipal fire company to be given the elite classification of Hotshots. The audience meets the members of the squad, gets to know them, grows with them, and mourns with them. The portrayal of these characters seemed realistic and I could easily put myself in their shoes. In too many movies similar to this, the characters are overly glorified, flaws are perhaps seen as betrayals of their heroic deeds. This movie shows that these heroes are humans too.
I must say, I enjoyed this movie start to finish. Here we get to see into a world that few ever experience. We know from the beginning that this is a dangerous job, and that tragedy will befall these heroes. As the movie builds to its climax I could feel myself trying to prepare emotionally for heartbreak. But in the end I failed, and it was all I could do to keep myself from bawling like a little girl. This is a great movie but be prepared for the heart wrenching climax.
