Ocean's 11 is arguably one of my favorite movies. Ocean's 12 on the other hand, is probably one of my least favorite movies. I've been loving the gender swap remakes Hollywood has been putting out lately, so I was super excited for Ocean's 8. Unfortunately, I think I watched too many previews for it, and that took away from my enjoyment of the film.
Ocean's 8 follows the story of Debbie Ocean, Danny Ocean's sister. He is (allegedly) passed away and she is carrying on his legacy of the great con. We see Debbie released on parole and she immediately returns to her slick con woman ways, scoring high end cosmetics and a posh hotel room. She gets to work on implementing a plan she spent 5+ years putting together while incarcerated - a way to rob the Met gala.
I feel like this movie fell short of hitting some of the high notes that Ocean's 11 does. Despite having less characters, I learned less about each character as an individual, most of them felt rather flat and two dimensional. Sandra Bullock's character was the most fleshed out, but even Cate Blanchett as her side kick came across as "meh" to me. I enjoyed the twists and turns and there was a decent amount of suspense, but overall it did not meet my expectations. Perhaps my expectations were too high.
If you enjoy a decent heist movie, or like the recent spate of gender swapped Hollywood remakes, you'll probably like this movie. If you go in with lower expectations it will perhaps be more enjoyable. I expected a movie of the caliber of Ocean's 11 and it's not quite there, it falls about 3 points lower (haha). Overall I still recommend seeing it, but it might be worth a rental instead.
