I was not expecting much from this movie. We decided to watch it on a Saturday morning while we ate breakfast, and if I'm really honest, I expected it to be so bad that I would turn it off within the first twenty minutes. (We have definitely done that with some Netflix originals and I am not the biggest Adam Sandler fan.) Instead, I found myself pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie!
Murder Mystery follows Audrey (Jennifer Aniston) and Nick Spitz (Adam Sandler) a couple celebrating 15 years of marriage with a trip abroad. Despite being solidly in the 99% themselves, they wind up on a yacht with people in the 1% and then someone is murdered! (I don't think that's a spoiler, it's right in the title.) What follows is a fun romp as Nick and Audrey try to solve the murder and clear their own names in the process.
What I love about this movie is that it did not take itself too seriously. It was wacky, it knew it was wacky, and that made the wackiness enjoyable rather than annoying. The movie felt like a cross between the 1985 classic Clue and the 2018 hit Game Night - both of which are movies I love. I lost count of how many times I literally laughed out loud during this movie - a sure sign that it was hilarious! The surprisingly star-studded cast did an excellent job with overacting just enough to fit the tone of the movie, but not enough to make it worthy of eye rolls. Kudos probably go to the director for that one.
If you are looking for a light-hearted movie night in, grab some popcorn and turn on Murder Mystery, it's the perfect flick for a fun evening!
