It has humor, interesting characters, and great conflict... I enjoyed this movie. Really, the only thing that could make it better for me is more of a personal taste, like science fiction or fantasy. If you like movies about real people that are struggling to make it in this crazy world, I think you'll like I, Tonya.
This is the story of Tonya Harding from a little girl until the famous 'incident' with Nancy Kerrigan. It's told from several perspectives, trying to do its best to show the truth of the situation, as best can be done. It paints a rather sympathetic picture of Harding; showing what she went through with the people around her. She comes from poverty, but her mom pushes her to become a skating champion. She surrounds herself with less-than-stellar people, who really are just doing their best with the nothing they have: which also means no real smarts among them. Harding can really skate, though, and with talent like that, the spotlight will follow. Sadly, this cast of characters can't really handle the pressures that come with fame, and everything crumbles.
In my opinion, this is a must-see movie. It shows the triumphs and the failures. It shows real people and real crazies and how they interact. It has all the ingredients that a great story needs, from the deep characters to the unbelievable assault on Kerrigan with the humor of the ridiculous people around Harding. It even toys with the social commentary of abuse and poverty. I, Tonya really makes you wonder what Harding could have done had she been born with the privilege of even being middle class. Or maybe had she not been put through hell, maybe she wouldn't have been as tough as she was. Regardless of what might have been, this really is a fantastic movie.
