I don't hate cheesy Christmas movies, but I definitely don't seek them out. I would say that I tolerate them, since Bethany just LOVES them. They pretty much all follow the same formula: the protagonist has an unsatisfactory life, but they often don't realize it. They meet the eventual love interest, but there is a misunderstanding and even though there are sparks, it just can't be. After this, there's the realization that there was some misconception with the love interest showing their true colors, but can they overcome their differences? Then they do, and happily ever after comes to them in the end. The rest of the story is just window dressing, really. But not this time! This actually puts that same story with a backdrop of actual important environmental impact! Surprise!
Holiday in the Wild tells the story of a woman faced with divorce and the complete collapse of her old life. She goes on a trip to Africa and falls in love... with a baby elephant! Oh yeah, Rob Lowe is there, too. Enter typical cheesy formula, but now we have a deep and meaningful backdrop of the realities of poaching of elephants for their ivory in Africa! She gets involved with animal rescue and ends up loving this new life. But her old life is calling. Will she stay in Africa or return to New York?
Yeah, it's the same formula seen a hundred times in these movies, but the impact of the elephant story is definitely felt. Instead of some superficial story about saving the hotel from bankruptcy, here we have an important conservation effort! I mean, sure, it's a bit heavy-handed, but it's still nice to have something meaningful in a movie like this. So this cheesy Christmas movie was a little easier to tolerate than most.
