I suggested we watch this movie for exactly two reasons - it's a Netflix movie and we try to review those and it starred Ryan Reynolds. We didn't even watch a full preview for it before pressing play so we had no idea what to expect, which I think makes it all the more fun!
I was blown away by this movie in the first twenty minutes. Usually, my absolute least favorite part of any action movie is the quintessential car chase scene. I find them incredibly dull and predictable - if I'm watching a movie at home I use this opportunity to look at my phone - if I'm in a theater I'll just start daydreaming during car chase scenes. 6 Underground begins with a car chase and I was riveted. I could not take my eyes off the screen, we were eating dinner and I literally let my food get cold in front of me because I didn't want to miss a moment of the movie.
Okay, so, it starts off really, really good and just keeps getting better. The story follows six vigilantes who have banded together under the leadership of "One" (Ryan Reynolds) to save the world by doing things world governments can't or won't do. The acting is impeccable, the story gripping, the cinematography awesome (it takes a lot for me to notice that so when I do, it must be good) and the soundtrack - my gosh the soundtrack! I loved every single song (which again, is something I don't often notice about a movie.) Oh, and the humor! I love an action film that doesn't take itself too seriously and there were so many truly funny moments in this one.
My one complaint is that the story jumps around a bit in the beginning in a way that seems needlessly confusing. It all ties together in the end but I think the introduction could have been done a little more cohesively. But that is a minor complaint because my main verdict is that this movie is AWESOME. It so awesome, in fact, that when it ended we immediately pressed play so we could watch it again! I have never enjoyed a movie so much that I watched it twice in a row, though let's be fair if I could have done that with Avengers: Infinity War and/or Endgame I would have. I would put this movie on par with the peak of the MCU and that is just about the highest praise I can ever give a movie.
I hope you watch it, and I hope you love it. And I hope there are sequels!
