Joel's 20 for 20 list

Submitted by Joel on Mon, 12/30/2019 - 07:25

Bethany told me about the idea she found online about 20 goals for the year 2020 and I thought it was a wonderful idea! So here are my goals and reasons behind each of them.

The typical one: Fitness

First of all, I want to get healthy in 2020. I started down the path and lost some weight, but ever since we went to France, I've slowly gained a bit of it back. Now, I'm back on track and ready to conquer some fitness goals!

Healthy Wage

In order to put my money where my mouth is, my first goal is:
1) Lose 20lbs twice on Healthy Wage.
If you haven't heard of it, Healthy Wage is a service we've used before and it's pretty simple. You pay a monthly fee and if you make your goal, you get your money back plus a bit more! We've used it before and it's always worked for us as an extra incentive. We've never actually made our goals, so we didn't get our money back, but that's ok! We still lost a lot of weight and that's worth the money! This time, though, we're in it to win it! We've got this! My plan is to lose at least 20 pounds twice on Healthy Wage. Very doable!

So HOW will I lose the weight? Exercise, mostly. I have some big goals besides weight loss. My next goal is:

2) Get at least one 20 mile walk/hike/jog in.
I'll be using RunKeeper to track my walks/runs in 2020, so I'll try and post when I achieve this goal. It shouldn't be too tough.

Besides endurance, I want to get my speed up, too. So my next goal is:
3) Run 2 miles in under 20 minutes at least 20 times.
I've run a few under ten minute miles in the last few years, so I should be able to get back to this speed by the end of 2020, right? I might need some new shoes...

It's not just goals for the year on my list. I also have some daily goals! I don't know if you've seen the anime series One Punch Man, but I just LOVE IT! It pokes fun at several genres, but I just love the main hero's backstory for how he became a super hero (MINOR SPOILER AHEAD!!). He trained hard for three years with the following regimen: Every day he'd do 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and run 10k. EVERY DAY! And because of that, he could punch holes in mountains! Ha! It's so silly, but I love it! (END SPOILER!!) So my daily goals will be:
4) 100 push-ups/day
5) 100 sit-ups/day
6) 100 squats/day
7) Work up to running 10k/day

This will be tough to start out, so, unlike my superheroic inspiration, I'll be making up for days that I miss. So 36,600 each for the year is the actual goal. And for running, I'm  WAY behind able to run 6 miles at once. So I'll have to work up to that over the year. I'll post my RunKeeper when I finally start being able to do it. At the end of the year, I'd really like to be at or over 1000k running for the year.

My last physical health goal is to add a carb cleanse. We already do intermittent fasting, which has really worked wonders for us, but sugar and carbs are always tough for me to overcome. So our goal is:
8) Consume less than 20g of carbs per day for 20 days.
This isn't 400g for 20 days. If I only eat 10g of carbs one day, it's still 20g the next. And if I go over, the clock resets!

My Professional Goals

I have a few things I'd like to try in 2020 that are more professional interests. I don't blog very often, but I'd like to do more work on the blog. One of our most active posts is my Beginner's Guide to Empires and Puzzles, so I'd like to expand on that. So my goal is:
9) Work on the blog an average of 20mins/day.
Which is really 140mins/week. 20 minutes a day doesn't really let the work flow, but it keeps in the 20 for 2020 template, right?

My next goal is to do a better job in keeping up with my background in sociology. So I plan to:
10) Study 20 scientific papers in the social sciences.
Most will likely be sociology papers, but if I find some psychology, anthropology, or political science papers, I'd love to study those, too. This isn't just reading them, but really try to consume them.

For my last professional goal, I'd like to expand my personal website www.joelwillers.com (which is currently a complete mess), and add something to it so I can use it as an idea repository. Some day, I'd like to try and write story ideas into movies or TV/Web series, but it seems so far away. So until I can get that going, I'd like a place to put my story ideas so I can come back to them. Towards that end, I plan to:
11) Update my personal website and get it ready for me to add ideas to expand on when I have more time.
Hopefully this will be a good start for me to start a hobby (or more if the stories are any good) of writing screenplays.

Once the website is in better shape, I'd like to:
12) Spend 20mins/day writing.
Similar to #9 above, this is more like 140min/wk. This could be a new idea or expanding on an idea I've already written about. And with this time goal, an additional goal to:
13) Come up with 20 new story ideas.
I already have about ten or so that I'd like to get down, but adding 20 more would really round it out and give me a good creative start.

My final goal for this new hobby of writing screenplays is to take movies that I already know and come up with ideas for tweaking or even fully re-imagining them. Star Wars comes to mind, as I mostly completely disagree with the direction the prequels and sequels have gone. So my goal is to:
14) Take 20 movies and come up with changes to them.
I'm hoping this will help me think more critically about movies and stories.

Self Care Goals

I think that self care is incredibly important for our mental and spiritual health. These goals should help me stay focused and centered and keep me mentally healthy for 2020 and years to come!

My first self care goal is to work on expanding my language capacity. I currently do ok with Spanish, but I'd like to work that up. In addition, I'd like to learn a little German to understand how the language works and some simple phrases. In order to achieve this, I plan to:
15) Spend at least 20mins/wk on a language other than English.
20mins per week isn't a lot, but it's more than I do now. Hopefully I can find a bit more time for it and even at that amount, I think it will help me keep my Spanish up and get some German in mind.

As I age, I've noticed my memory isn't what it once was, so to build it back up (or reduce how much it fades), my goal is to:
16) Play a memory-building game for 20mins/day.
And as above, this is more like 140mins/wk. I am hoping to find some good games that will exercise my memory, especially for names/places.

For spiritual growth, I want to try and be more mindful of self and of community. For self-growth, I want to:
17) Meditate for 20 mins 3 times per week.
I'm hoping this will give me more focus and alertness as well as some spiritual centering. In addition, I want to have more community spirituality, so I plan to:
18) Attend church services 20 times throughout the year.
Although Bethany is a pastor, I struggle with organized religion. I'm more of the mindset that church is in the heart, but I need to be more a part of the community, I think. We'll see how it goes!

I really love music, but I rarely am able to find the time to explore it lately. I have only added two or three new songs to my playlists each year for the last few years, which is really unlike me. So for 2020, I would like to:
19) Add 20 new favorites to my playlists.
And only 2 from the same artist can count! Suggestions are welcome!

Finally, I'd like to try and be less self-involved in 2020. So to help me with this, I plan to:
20) Give Bethany 20 El Dia de Bethany.
Every once in a while, I will declare a day to be Bethany's Day (or El Dia de Bethany), where she gets to decide pretty much everything and she doesn't have to put much effort into whatever it is. I'll pamper her more, let her choose all the shows we watch, etc. for the day. In 2020, I want to do this at least 20 times. And that doesn't include her birthday!

So that's my list of 20 goals for 2020! What do you think? Some are pretty easy, but some will be really tough! Any thoughts or suggestions? Let me know in the comments!
