A High Tea Happy Birthday

Submitted by Bethany on Thu, 10/24/2019 - 10:00

Welcome to a throwback Thursday post! I never quite got around to sharing about everything we did over the summer, so over the next few weeks on Thursdays I'm going to throw it back to earlier this year in the USA. Today it's all about Joels grandmother's birthday party which, even though she now lives in Texas, just happened to take place in Iowa at a place where I used to work!

Most of Joel's Texas-based family was coming to town for the high school graduation of one of the nieces. Since grandma's birthday happened to be around the same time her daughters organized a surprise birthday party for her. They rented the event space at the Clive Aquatic Center which is about a mile from parents and the place where I spent four long, hot summers as a lifeguard. We didn't get to spend any time in the pool but we did get to celebrate with a fancy high tea! Joel's Aunt's all did a fabulous job decorating what is usually a plain box of a room and making it look fancy and fun.

There were several photo opportunities set up around the room so we picked this lovely flower arch for our photo with the birthday girl. I loved her outfit - especially that headpiece - and I hope to have this much style someday!

After everyone arrived there was an incredible lunch served of a variety of sandwiches, pasta salad, potato salad, veggies, fruit, and of course, tea. They enlisted some of the younger cousins to come around and serve everyone tea from real teapots which felt very fancy indeed. The food was delicious though it turns out I didn't take any pictures of the real food...I was too distracted by the epic dessert table!

I couldn't decide on just one thing so I got a plate full of different options to try. They were all tiny so I'm pretty sure together they added up to just one dessert. At least, that's what I'll tell myself.

Other than eating we got to spend a lot of time chatting and catching up with family we hadn't seen in a long time. Many people came from all over the state and the country to attend the party and I even got to meet some of Joel's family that I hadn't met before! We've been married six years but you know how it goes with extended family - it adds up to a lot of people! My favorite picture of the whole day is this one of Joel's grandmother - I'm not sure what I caught her in the middle of but that expression on her face is priceless!

The amount of attention to detail put into this party was incredible. My absolute favorite touch was this teacup and saucer Joel's grandmother got to use. The floral with the gold detail is stunning and I love anything that makes a birthday feel extra special! You know that something like this is on my wishlist for future birthdays... The whole party with the "high tea" theme was just so much fun, especially after we had just lived in England for a few months where tea is a daily occasion! I definitely appreciated this party more than I would have just a year ago.

Fancy tea + good food + family = one good day.

XOXO, Bethany
