Tomorrow we plan to take the day off for the Fourth of July. We will spend the holiday with family and friends, eating steak from the grill, and hopefully, watching some fireworks! In the meantime, I thought I'd help get us all in the patriotic spirit with some pictures from the freedom rock in Greenfield, Iowa.
This 60+ ton rock became the Freedom Rock in 1999 when artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II painted it as a tribute to our veterans. He repaints the rock every year so it has a new scene by Memorial Day in May. According to his website, Bubba was inspired by the movie Saving Private Ryan and felt inspired to give veterans a unique tribute.
Since then, the idea has grown, with Bubba creating a "Freedom Rock Tour" around Iowa. His goal is eventually to create a freedom rock in each of the 99 counties of Iowa. These rocks will not get repainted like the original does every year, but will remain the same. Each one will be somewhat tailored to the county where it is located.
For our friends abroad, I hope you have a great Thursday tomorrow. For our friends in the USA, I hope you have a wonderful time celebrating the Fourth of July!
