Who Wants to Live in Italy for 3 Months?

Submitted by Bethany on Wed, 01/23/2019 - 10:00

I do! I mean, who wouldn't want to live in Italy for three months, am I right?

We get a lot of questions about how we do what we do, and we share all about how to find a housesit and how to be a good housesitter  on the blog. But if you aren't ready to sell everything you own and travel the world by housesitting, I thought I'd share some information on an amazing opportunity that Air BnB is offering in Italy this summer.

Air BnB has partnered with a town in southern Italy called Grottole to offer what they are deeming an Italian sabbatical. It's a chance to leave your normal life behind for three months so you can go live as a citizen in a small, rural, Italian town. You would be provided with housing and work with community members to learn about local agriculture, food and cooking, the language, and more! If selected the program will pay for your travel, help you get a visa, and provide for most expenses.

How amazing does that sound?

So amazing that Joel and I have already applied!

Four people will be chosen for this life experiment, so even though I'm sure the competition will be fierce, we thought we'd give you a heads up so you can apply, too! It would give you a chance to experience some of what life is like for us right now with a lot less commitment and personal financial investment.

One of our goals everywhere we go is to get involved in the community - to make friends and build relationships. We have figured out ways to do this on our own (going to church is one of the best!) but to partner with an intentional program like this one in Italy would be a dream come true for us. You don't just get to live in a new place and explore, but you will have people who really want to welcome you and help you be a part of the established community.

You can learn all about the program and apply here at the Italian Sabbatical website

We've applied, so wish us luck!

If you apply, let us know, so we can wish you luck! (And if you get it, I'll be asking you to write some guest blog posts, ha!)

If you can't apply (we know most people can't drop everything in their lives for three months) let's just dream together for a minute. What would be your favorite thing if you could do this? The cooking classes? Language lessons? Exploring the Italian countryside? Helping to revitalize a small town? The views? It all sounds like a dream to me!

XOXO, Bethany
