McDonald's Around the World: Paphos, Cyprus

Submitted by Bethany on Thu, 08/09/2018 - 10:00

You had to know this was coming... of course we didn't make it to the major city nearest to us without checking out the local McDonald's! We arrived in town about 45 minutes before the Tombs of the Kings opened, so we had just enough time to walk a few blocks and grab second breakfast at the fast food joint.

I was impressed with how clean and modern the building was, both inside and out. It seems like it must be a pretty new location, it is one of the nicer McDonald's I have ever seen in the States or abroad. As we approached it was so quiet that Joel was worried it wasn't open yet, but what McDonald's isn't open at 7:30 in the morning? It's the perfect time for a breakfast sandwich - perhaps my favorite McD's offering. (I was super psyched when they started serving breakfast all day).

It continued to be eerily quiet and deserted when we entered, but did indeed appear to be open. We were hoping the breakfast menu would have something to order that we have never seen before, and we were in luck! There was a big section of the menu advertising the Halloumi Muffin. I immediately got excited because I have been wanting to try Halloumi ever since we got here. My friend Amber did her college study abroad in Cyprus, and knowing my love of cheese, she told me all about the amazingness that is Halloumi. It is a cheese that is served fried, but rather than breaded or coated in anyway like most fried cheese, it is literally just the cheese itself, fried! Um, yum! Let's be real, I'll eat just about any cheese, but gooey, warm, fried cheese is always at the top of the list.

Like the McD's we went to in Paris, this one had an ordering kiosk so even though no one was at the front counter we were able to place our order. We could choose between the Halloumi Muffin with or without bacon, so we went with bacon, duh. (Joel actually wanted to see if we could switch the bacon for sausage, his preferred breakfast meat, but I convinced him we should try it as the menu offers it). After an easy time with the kiosk Joel used his phone to use Google Pay - what is this magic?! This was our first time using the app and it is so freaking simple and mind boggling.  All you do is wave your phone near the credit card thing and voila!

After our quick order and quick pay, the food came quickly as well! All wrapped up it looked like typical McDonald's fare served on a typical tray, and for a moment it felt like a typical visit to the restaurant. But then I remembered that there was some fried cheese goodness waiting for me on this sandwich and I couldn't wait to dig in!

It was love at first bite. The Halloumi was delicious - salty, chewy, cheesy perfection. In addition to the Halloumi and bacon, the breakfast sandwich had tomato and lettuce, all on an English Muffin. With the bacon, lettuce, tomato and Halloumi it was basically a glorified BLT - but glorified in the best way! In fact now that I think about it, I might need to add Halloumi to allll my BLT's in the future.

We may or may not make it back to try any non-breakfast items, but even if this is all we try at Cyprus McDonald's I call it a win! Oh wait, now that I think about it... what if they add Halloumi to burgers? Um, that sounds awesome! *Runs to Google* Ok, no burgers with Halloumi, so I won't be missing out if we don't make it back, phew. Which means more time to find other restaurants that have Halloumi! I'm a gal on a mission now!

What do you think? Is the Halloumi Muffin with bacon something you would try? Have you had Halloumi before? Tell me all about it in the comments!

XOXO, Bethany

Your thoughts?

ALLLLLLLLL the Halloumi!! In my face, all day, everyday. It will be something you crave about this place once you leave it. Eat it as often as budget and waistline allow.

Yessssss it is sooo good! Have you ever seen it in the States? I think I've had it at a Greek restaurant before but I don't recall ever seeing it at the grocery store. I will take your encouragement and eat it as often as possible! Yum!
