Life As a Small Business Owner

Submitted by Bethany on Fri, 01/13/2017 - 16:32

Last fall my husband and I started a business together, selling LuLaRoe clothing.  Joel was a small business owner for years; he owned a game store in Ames that focused on Magic the Gathering.  I never thought I'd be a business owner...let alone something in direct sales, but when I found LuLaRoe I fell in love to the point that selling it seemed like a great option.

Currently, I am half time at my chaplaincy job, and half time (theoretically) doing LuLaRoe.  But I've started to learn that running a business out of your home means that you are basically at work all the time.  There is always something more to be done.  Pictures to take, packages to ship, Facebook notifications that need responses.  I love it, and it's hard, at the same time.

When I have a full day to work on LuLaRoe, it's nice to be able to focus.  I love spending the whole day with my husband, and we have time to go do other things as well.  Today we took a small field trip to go see the local magic store in town.  Joel is friends with the owner and he had recently moved to a new place so we wanted to check it out.

The store has way more space than he had before, and it looks great!  It almost makes me wish we could have a storefront for LuLaRoe.  But in the end, I realize that being able to work the business from home is one of the great advantages of LuLaRoe.  I think I just need to get a littler better at setting some boundaries for myself, and remembering that it's ok to take some time to relax in the evenings!
